Kelly Gale Amen, an interior designer based in Houston, Texas, founded Cancer Below The Belt as an awareness and prevention cause. Kelly is himself a cancer survivor who wanted to spread the message about getting oneself regularly checked to prevent unnecessary deaths due to this insidious disease. As a way of defusing the often sensitive discussion surrounding the “Dirty Dozen” varieties of cancer targeted, Kelly came up with a tongue in cheek way of saying, We Can (And Should) Talk About This!
“Get Caught With Your Pants Down” is the registered slogan of the charity and is exactly as it sounds. Participants drop their pants (or dresses and skirts) to show they are not afraid to confront something everyone needs to know more about and particularly the numerous ways one can survive. Surrounded by a cadre of like-minded people, Kelly and CBTB want the world to know that, if detected early, cancers below the belt can be controlled and defeated and that contracting them should not be viewed as a stigma.
Mezlan has joined forces with Kelly in this endeavor, beginning with events held in its Houston Galleria location. Now it is time to go national and Mezlan will be holding events in its Chicago (June 7th), Arlington, VA (June 9th) and Atlanta (June 15th) locations. These events will all feature a drawing for the iconic Hora and Athena Pillows (raffle tickets can be purchased at the three Mezlan stores as well as online), with 20% of all proceeds from the day’s sales going to CBTB. The Atlanta event will feature an appearance by Kellye Gray, world-renowned jazz singer. For more information about events, please go to cancerbelowthebelt.com/events.
