Oldest Leather Shoe: Great Moments in Shoe History
Mezlan Presents? In 2008, Archaeologists discovered evidence of an early civilization in modern-day Armenia dating back to 3,500 BC. Diana Zardaryan, an Armenian post-grad student, uncovered a shoe that was in nearly perfect condition while excavating the Areni-1 cave complex in the Vayots Dzor province. The shoe was made from a single piece of cowhide laced with a leather cord along seams at the front and back with grass stuffed inside of it.
Archaeologists were uncertain if the grass was used as insulation to keep the foot warm or used to maintain the shape of the shoe while not being worn. Experts claim the shoe is the oldest piece of leather footwear ever discovered, and it was preserved to be displayed in the History Museum of Armenia.
